NetApp emphasizes software, security

Network Appliance has updated its product line, but only one of its new announcements describes a new hardware product.

Instead, the company says software enhancements and increased attention to security are the things its customers are asking for most often. Accordingly, the company has delivered an enhanced suite of software products and again emphasized its encryption technology's relevance to storage administrators charged with ensuring data is protected in every way possible.

The most significant new software offering is an application called 'Virtual File Manager Migration Edition' that makes it possible to consolidate files from different storage platforms onto one, new machine provided by Network Appliance.

The company also announced upgrades SnapManager for Oracle and SnapManager for Exchange, plus 'Protection Manager', a new product billed as "an automated backup and replication management tool for NetApp disk-to-disk environments."

Mark Heers, the company's Director, Marketing and Alliances for Australia and New Zealand told TechTarget ANZ the software enhancements are a direct response to customers needs.

"Customers tell us the best thing we can do for them is to simplify storage administration," he said.

The company also announced a new mid-tier storage device, the FAS3070 storage system. Heers declared these the highest capacity devices in the mid-tier, a category he defines as businesses with up to 2500 seats. The FAS3070 can store up to 25 terabytes of data in RAID 6 configurations. 4GB SAN and 10GB iSCSI are both supported.

Heers concluded his briefing with the revelation that "We take more calls on security than on storage at the moment."

"There is clearly customer demand to put security into the storage layer," he said.
