ASIC flags database virtualization push as part of massive Symantec backup rollout

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission will conduct a new Enterprise Backup and Recovery Project that will see the organisation extend its use of Symantec backup products, choose between hardware-based and software-based data deduplication. More database virtualization is also on the agenda.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) will conduct an “Enterprise Backup and Recovery Project” that will see the organisation extend its use of Symantec backup products into its x86 environment and adopt the company’s wares throughout its Solaris server fleet.

In tender documents issued yesterday, ASIC says it “… has determined that the Symantec solution will be extended to encompass ASIC's x86 and remaining Solaris UNIX server environments (excluding mainframe). The Project will mitigate risks by providing more stability to business systems requiring recovery in the event of data loss or data corruption.”

The new software is expected to provide “… backup and restore requirements for ASIC’s production systems across Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Traralgon. It is only concerned with the backup and restore of the application data, related meta-data, and the reinstallation and reconfiguration of application or database software.”

The winning reseller will also be required to provide 30 minute response times when ASIC requires, with trained support engineers to be available 24x7x365.

A total of 250TB is expected to come under management by the new software, which is largely to be used on virtualized hosts running VMware ESX.

The organisation also flags greater adoption of virtualization technologies, with the tender stating that the software will backup three SQL database server VM's, one Oracle database server VM and 17 Lotus Domino server VM's, but that tenderers should expect that “The SQL and Oracle database VM's will grow to 3 times this approx in the next 12 months. “

Data deduplication is also on ASIC’s agenda, but the organisation is unsure if it will hand this task to Symantec, stating that “It is yet to be determined whether software or hardware based deduplication will be used.”
