Acronis wins where skills are thin

Acronis last week released version 11 of its eponymous software, adding file backup, virtual machine protection and more to Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.

But there was a nugget or two of local interest as well when we chatted to Karl Sice, Acronis’ for Pacific and Australia New Zealand.

“Around two thirds of our business is classic small to medium enterprise,” he said.

“20% of business is pure enterprise, on sites where they don’t have the resources on the ground to operate more complex products.” Such sites, Sice said, are nonetheless virtualised and have sophisticated infrastructure but can’t get the people to do more than the basics.

“As you move away from a central environment it becomes hard to invest in resources to provide the service and policies and procedures,” he told SearchStorage ANZ last week. “There is IT resource but it is very limited. Sometimes it’s in remote parts of Australia where they have IT and ops people but they do not have the resources to do it all. It’s also hard to get the connectivity to do over the wire backup.”

Those issues combined with what Sice said is a “lack of skills and little ability to govern the environment” means “Sometimes disaster recovery takes a back seat.”
